2007 ALA Annual Conference

December 2, 2006

We should all start a fund for everyone who wants to attend ALA next year. We could possibly approach library friends with the idea and/or start saving our own funds. We could all learn so much there and meet other librarians from around the country.

Google Library Project

December 2, 2006

I was reading the November 2006 issue of American Libraries and found that the University of Wisconsin at Madison Library is using joining Google’s project to digitize books and provide access to their contents through its search engine. Wisconsin is the eighth library to join so far.

It would be amazing if Google could accomplish such a task as digitizing books. I just wonder how many libraries are willing to join. One aspect of document digitization that immediately cam to mind was copyright violations. Because if Google’s present endeavor, they are in court with the Association of American publishers and the Author’s Guild.

Its also interesting to note that Wisconsin will only scan materials that are not under copyright.

Suggestion – Rebecca Caudill books

November 17, 2006

When a patron wants to read one of the Rebecca Caudill nominees, I find myself spending a lot of time locating them all.  Could we have a shelf just for these books so that we could just check one location?

bookbuddies.jpgOur new Book Buddies book discussion program for 4th-6th graders recently got together for a kick-off picnic.  The kids had fun talking about their favorite books and what they wanted to read next.

From the Suggestion Box

November 16, 2006

One of the things we are going to do here on the Our Library blog is reply to staff suggestions, so feel free to post new suggestions here.

One of the staff questions that recently came across my desk is this, “My code for the security system is hard to remember.  Can I make up a different one?”

Answer:  Sure!  As long as your new code is not the same as anyone else’s code, Tim can help you change your code to something that is easier for you to remember.
